Do i want a FireWire cable if a hold a camcorder that lone have a USB to donload content to imovie on a mac?

i want to download my video to my mac but when i plug it within and put it on VCR, nothing happen. on imovie i switch it to camcorder and it only go to the isight. how do i get the video on my video recorder to my macbook?
