Connection between synthesizer and laptop isnt working...abet!?

I only just got a Macbook, and be trying to hook up my Yamaha S90 Es synthesizer to it via-USB so that I can use it in Garageband. But my laptop isn't recognize the keyboard at adjectives. Are they not compatible, or is there some other driver I want to install? Any help would be great, gratitude!
